Chameleon Lighting is headquartered in Niceville, in the Free State of Florida, and every part of this system was built here: the phone app, the web app, the cloud that ties them together, and the firmware on the controller screwed to your house.

The specifics

Three questions worth asking of any connected product.

Who builds it

Chameleon Lighting, headquartered in Niceville, Florida. All software development is conducted in the Free State of Florida — app, cloud and firmware alike. Hardware is assembled and programmed here before it ships.

Where it runs

On Amazon Web Services, an American company, in their US East (Ohio) region — a data center in Columbus, Ohio. Your account, schedules, content and controller state are stored there and nowhere else.

Who is accountable

A named American business, operating under Florida and United States law, with a phone number that reaches a person — not a support form in another jurisdiction.

Ohio is close, and that’s not just a talking point

When you’re away from home and tap a color, the command travels from your phone to our servers and down to your controller. Hosting that round trip in the middle of the country means it crosses a few states rather than an ocean, so the lights respond in a fraction of a second.

At home it’s faster still. When your phone is on the same Wi‑Fi as the controller, the app talks to it directly over your own network — no trip to Ohio at all, so the lights answer as fast as you can drag your finger. The cloud is still kept up to date behind the scenes, so the rest of the household, your schedules and your other devices all see the same thing.

What we don’t do with your information

Not a promise about intentions — a description of what the software contains.

  • We don’t sell your data. Not to advertisers, data brokers or anyone, not even in aggregate.
  • No analytics or tracking software in the app. No advertising SDK, no crash reporting, no attribution library.
  • No advertising profile of you. Your account has a username, a profile picture and your email so you can sign in and take part in the community. We store what running your lights and your account requires, and that’s the whole list.
  • We never receive your Wi‑Fi password. It goes from your phone to the controller over an encrypted local connection.
  • We don’t track your location. It’s used for sunrise and sunset only, rounded to about half a mile on your phone first.
  • You can delete everything yourself, immediately, from the app or a browser.

Your lights don’t depend on us

The whole effect engine, every schedule and your saved content run on the chip in the box, on your own network. Cut the internet and the lights keep their calendar and keep answering your phone over Wi‑Fi. You can run a Chameleon controller with no account at all, for free, and never send us a byte. A company should have to earn the connection, not hold your hardware hostage for it.

The exceptions, stated plainly

The app makes a small number of requests to services outside the US: one turns a broad location into a time zone when you set up a schedule, and another powers search in the stock artwork library. They go directly from your phone, carry no account information and never include a precise coordinate. Every third party that touches the Service is listed in the privacy policy.
